If the
Victorian Rose Bed and Breakfast could be described in
one word, that word would have to be elegant. The
unique character and distinctive design of this glorious
mansion is obvious from the moment you step inside to
see the decorative hardwood floors, beautiful staircase,
the chandelier in the foyer, and the rich, beautiful
hand carved doors and woodwork throughout. Although the
home, built in 1897 by John Young, is listed in the
National Historic Register of Historic Places, it only
recently took on its new role as a bed and breakfast
establishment. |
| Having grown
up in Richland Center, sisters Dawn Miller and Dee Davis
were familiar with the beautiful two-story Victorian
home in Muscoda on South Wisconsin Avenue. Dawn lived
here most of her adult life, and Dee moved back to the
area about three years ago, bringing with her a
life-long dream to open a bed & breakfast. Soon that
dream was shared by her sister, and after taking a walk
through the mansion together, they decided on the spot
to fulfill that dream. They immediately bought the
105-year old home, and soon came to appreciate even more
that the five previous owners had kept it in such good
condition and never painted the ornately carved
woodwork. |

Dawn and Dee both have backgrounds in the people
business, but not in the hospitality industry. They saw
that as their greatest challenge in the beginning, but
one that would quickly be overcome. They attended a
workshop presented by the Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast
Association (WBBA), at which a book entitled, So ~ You
Want to be an Innkeeper published by Chronicle Books,
1996, was given to them. Theyve both read it several
times, cover to cover, and Dee says, We refer to it
almost daily to make sure were still doing it right! So
far, so good! |

The Victorian Rose Bed &
Breakfast opened in January, 2005, entirely decorated in
period furnishings, and featuring three guest rooms: The
American Beauty - with a queen-size iron bed and private
bath, The Rambling Rose Suite - with a queen-size bed,
walnut armoire, mahogany chair and loveseat, and beveled
glass doors that open into a sitting room featuring a
day bed/trundle. This suite can accommodate four guests
and includes a private bath with Jacuzzi tub and
separate shower. The Peace Rose Room - features twin
beds with iron headboards, and includes a private bath,
all with a rose theme. A full breakfast is served each
morning, and samples of local wines and chesses are
served on the half moon deck in the afternoon, weather
permitting. |

When asked what their
favorite part of owning the Victorian Rose Bed &
Breakfast was, Dawn and Dee simultaneously answered,
The people! Dee smiled and said, We love the
people who come here! They are so much fun! Dawn
added, They make themselves at home and feel very
comfortable here. Guests are usually here for a
purpose; whether to attend a show at APT, a family
reunion, seminars at the art studio, tour the area,
attend the Civil War reenactment in Boscobel, the
Mushroom Festival in Muscoda, or a wedding, they enjoy
the warmth and comfort of a bed & breakfast.

We consider
it a magnificent home, and we feel so lucky to own it.
