Built in 1965 as a senior
retirement facility, Schmitt Woodland Hills Retirement
Community is proudly celebrating their 40th anniversary
this year. In the early 1960s, William Schmitt
bequeathed a substantial portion of his estate to the
West Wisconsin Conference of the Methodist Church to
facilitate the initial plans and construction of the
building. In the 1980s the Health Center was expanded
and the Westview Assisted Living wing was added. Today,
after several more additions and improvements over the
years, Schmitt Woodland Hills is a modern and
comfortable place to live, where each and every unit has
a beautiful view of Richland Centers picturesque hills
and fresh, clean country air to breathe. |

Jim Olson, SWH
Administrator, is passionate about the quality of
services they have to offer; We take care of lives - we
take care of people, of families. Difficult situations
that residents families sometimes confront are faced
together with SWHs staff. He went on to say that care
wishes and advance directives are addressed in the
residents care plan, and helping the resident to deal
with any infirmities is often a continually changing
process throughout their stay. Jims favorite part of
being the Administrator at Schmitt Woodland Hills is
getting to know the people, both residents and staff. He
enjoys taking the time to know many of the residents,
but adds that he wishes there was more time for him to
do that. He is especially proud of his staff and their
sensitivity to the elderlys needs and desires. |
 |
 |
Jim notes that as a
non-profit organization, SWH represents Richland Center
in creating quality services for the elderly.
- SWH Health Center is
a 25-bed skilled nursing care facility with 24-hour
nursing care.
- Westview Assisted
Living is a 30-bed Community Based Residential
Facility (CBRF) offering nursing directed hi-end
CBRF care.
- The Residential
Apartments are a 38-unit retirement center in the
SWH assisted living Retirement Care Apartment
Complex (RCAC) offering independent living
accommodations in several choices of floor plans,
options, and services.
- The House Calls
Program provides personal and supportive care home
services to over 100 residents in the apartments and
throughout the community.
|
|
Additionally, Schmitt
Woodland Hills serves peoples needs through their
outreach programs; exercise classes, games,
sing-a-longs, news discussions, community forums,
transportation services and trips, as well as many other
activities are offered regularly. The lower level of the
Westview wing is occupied by Discovery Playschool, which
serves as the cornerstone of their intergenerational
program. Residents have the opportunity to volunteer as
readers, teaching assistants, playtime monitors, or in
any other capacity they wish. Although SWHs roots were
based in the Methodist Church, nine faiths are currently
represented by the residents. |
 |
 |
Overall, Schmitt Woodland
Hills continuum of care offers a dignified and friendly
environment in which to enjoy a rich quality of life in
the retirement years. Their Christian philosophy of
care is very evident when visiting with both residents
and staff.
