IRembrandt & Rutabagas is one of Richland County’s newest B&Bs, and one of the most unique. Jane Kintz, art teacher at Doudna Elementary School, utilized every bit of her creativity when designing an addition to the old family farmhouse just north of Richland Center. Her original intention was to build additional rooms for out of town family and friends to visit, and eventually, after her retirement, to host art workshops. However, once the house was built, she decided not to wait to have guests come and opened Rembrandt & Rutabagas in July of 2004 when her first visitors arrived before she even did any advertising.
Jane says she likes running a B&B… “it’s a blast!” She’s met some really interesting people over the last year, and that’s the best part. Her guests come from all over, and she’s also had the opportunity to reconnect with old high school and college friends through guests that have stayed there.

The architecture of the home is an International style, characteristic of the Qualley house on East Seminary, a long-time favorite of Jane’s. She wanted something different, inside as well as outside, and the interior has the same clean lines as the exterior to blend the two together. Mid-century modern furniture, art deco, and lots of color create an interesting and fun atmosphere. Much of the furniture and collectibles at Rembrandt & Rutabagas were purchased at Valley Antique Mall, some are family treasures, and some are childhood collections that are continually being added to.

A sidelight from the Eskin Theater and water fountain from outside the old high school are among the many works of art that add to the charm and offer some interesting area history for guests to enjoy. Jane wants her home and the B&B to be fun… she likes people to look around and see something, and then start laughing.

Jane took special care in designing the floor plan herself, and the builder, Ron Mommaerts, along with the architect, Peter Rott, helped her with the exterior design and did the drawings. The layout and positioning of windows were planned to capture views of the farm, which has special meaning to Jane. Once the work got underway, the builders took pleasure in forming the artistic features so intricately designed into the building.
As a bed & breakfast, a healthy continental breakfast is served to guests each morning, including fruit, yogurt, muffins and more. Jane invites you to call in a reservation for a great get-away, or for a retreat for family and friends visiting the area.

Rembrandt & Rutabagas B&B is a member of the Richland Area Chamber of Commerce.
