The Creative Urge is a wonderful gift
shop and gallery that displays many types of arts and
crafts for more than thirty local and regional artists.
Carol Hacker and her daughter, Suzanne Hagemann, opened
the store in 2003 to give Wisconsin scroll saw artists a
place to display their artwork. Since then, the shop has
expanded to include paintings, pottery, crafts,
quilting, and more. |
| Carol and Suzanne are both
talented artists, painting in oils and acrylics on
glass, saw blades, canvas, and other media that lends
itself to their artistic eye. Local artists contribute
unique handcrafted wood furniture, jewelry, pottery, and
gifts. You'll also find a large selection of
wreaths and dried flowers, and many other quality
handcrafted items. The quilted items are created
in India and brought to Richland Center by a missionary
group from the area.
Carol's goal has been to work with Wisconsin artists,
particularly those in the southwestern part of the
state. Artists sell their work on consignment, and bring
new work in regularly. |

Carol and her husband, Floyd
Hacker, opened Ocooch Hardwoods thirteen years ago.
From the hardwoods store, Floyd processes and sells a
wide variety of wood for scroll sawers and contractors.
Carol creates scroll saw art in a workshop behind the
wood products display area and The Creative Urge was the
perfect compliment to their business, giving her a
display outlet for her work. (See example of
Carol's artwork to the left.) Ocooch Hardwoods and
The Creative Urge share building space at the corner of
County Hwy OO and Hwy 80, just south of the Middle
School. |

Floyd and Carol hosted the Midwest Scroll Saw Picnic in
Richland Center in 2003, attracting people from all over
the US and Canada. In 2004, the picnic became the
Midwest Scroll Saw Trade Show, and moved from the Middle
School to the High School to accommodate the large crowd
that attended. Now the trade show is an annual
event held the first weekend in August each year.
New fall items, as well as Halloween, Thanksgiving,
and Christmas items are coming into the store now.
Carol will be hosting a Holiday Open House
on November 18th this year and invites everyone to
stop by to shop and browse for your holiday gift
selections. |
