While on a visit to Richland County from their home in
Madison, Bill and Colleen Schroeder were excited when
they first ran across Alana Springs Campground, a
beautiful campground nestled in the hills of Richland
County just West of Richland Center. The
campground was for sale, and the convenient location to
Madison offered them the opportunity to bring Bill's
parents, Helen and Ron Olsen, to the area as managers of
the campground so Bill and Colleen could continue
working at their present positions. |
| It was only after they moved here that
Bill and Colleen realized the full impact that their
newly re-opened campground had on the Richland area
tourism business. Alana Springs is a home base for
hunters and anglers who come here for the deer, wild
turkey, and trout fishing in our abundant trout streams.
Spring turkey hunters jump-start the camping season in
mid April followed by the first opening of trout season
in May. Colleen notes that "we have excellent trout
streams within a 40-mile radius of Alana Springs... but
no one gives away their exact fishing spots!" |

The campground
stays open late into fall, closing only when the water
needs to be turned off to keep the pipes from
freezing... and campers continue to come up until that
time. They fill up the weekend of Star Spangled
Celebration, the Scroll Saw weekend, and during youth
baseball tournaments in late July. They also have
campers during Center Color Fiesta weekend, the rodeo,
and Vetesnik's big weekend. |
|
Lots of people in town know of Alana Springs and bring
family out to camp there when they come to visit.
A new shelter on the grounds opens up more possibilities
for reunions, outdoor weddings, and other gatherings.
Alana Springs welcomes all campers, and campsites
accommodate tents, pop-ups, trailers, and motor homes.
There is lots of green space and places for kids to
explore, as well as horse shoe pits and a volleyball
court. |

While visiting Alana Springs, campers see a variety of
birds and wildlife, including deer and wild turkey that
are thick in the area around the campground. In
addition, they have regular visits from a screech owl, a
barn owl, and a great horned owl, as well as wood ducks
in the pond, and a variety of other birds. Colleen
says, "Alana Springs is the best kept secret in
Richland County..." but encourages people to go
ahead and tell friends, family, and people passing
through about the treasure we have in Alana Springs. |
